The six best practices you need to implement to protect Windows computers
Introduction
The first reports were found, and it's clear that Windows 7, Microsoft has had a rapid onset, thanks in part to beta program for Microsoft Windows liberal 7 and pent-up demand for a new operating system Vista and XP. Windows 7's market share is now 4%, a figure that is being driven by users who call for greater security, faster boot times, greater stability and greater ease of use, according to market researcher Net Applications.
Windows 7 is more secure than Vista and XP, but remains vulnerable
Microsoft has made a number of improvements in Windows 7, which are detailed in "What's new in Windows 7" on page 4.
User Account Control (UAC) is an area that Microsoft addressed. Its purpose is to help prevent unauthorized changes to desktops and laptops. UAC asking permission does the user or an administrator password before performing actions that could affect the operation of the equipment or change settings that affect other users.
By verifying these actions before they start, UAC can help prevent viruses, spyware and other malicious software to install or make changes to computers without authorization.
However, UAC is far from bulletproof. In its analysis, Sophos UAC found blocked only 1 in 10 randomly selected virus, demonstrating once again that the protection of a modern PC malware software still requires anti-virus and other security.
Security Best Practices for Windows 7
If you are planning to release Windows 7 Microsoft, now is the time to review its strategic endpoint and data protection practices for all Windows computers, no matter what system versions OS is running.
There are several best practices of any organization-whether a small, medium or large company must follow to protect your Windows machines of the potentially disastrous consequences of being attacked by viruses, spyware and other forms of malware:
1. First, stop threat. An obvious step, but important, is to use anti-virus software to prevent, detect and eliminate all types of malware that have the potential to cause considerable damage to their systems and data.
One of the most common methods of virus detection is the search for known patterns or signatures in executable code. However, with the increase in the number and complexity of unknown malware threats, a user may be infected with malware still new to the there is no signature. To counteract these so-called zero-day threats, must protect its platforms with anti-virus protection solution that provides proactively identifies new viruses by studying their behavior and prevent them from running.
To ensure that your anti-virus solution is doing what we hope, what you need to keep up to date. Because new viruses can spread quickly, it is important to have an automatic infrastructure in place that can be update all the computers in your organization seamlessly, often without notice to keep abreast of the latest threats.
Another way simple to prevent threats to cause delays is to stay informed. Subscribe to lists of email anti-virus vendor up to date information on virus threats, support, technical information and new product development.
2. Stay current with software patches. Although Microsoft continues improving the security of their applications and operating systems, hackers are focusing more rabble of exploiting holes in the third party and internal applications developed.
Remind yourself to check regularly the websites of its suppliers of third party applications to see if updates have been published.
Many software manufacturers also issue security warnings. For example, Microsoft is running a mailing list that warns of security flaws and other problems found in Microsoft software, and provides patches to button up.
When a new security hole is in an application or operating system and a patch is available, organizations must be prepared with an infrastructure for testing the patch works correctly and rolling from one end to another of its base users.
3. Strengthen its data loss prevention (DLP). The threat of malware used to be about doing both writers noise as possible to gain notoriety. However, more recently it has become a criminal enterprise that is out to steal personal information. In light of this, must also consider the steps you can take to protect your data from falling into the wrong hands.
There are four components of data protection should take into account:
"Monitoring the application" allows you to manage applications that allows its workers to use. This ensures adherence to security policy, and that sensitive data can not leave their organization through applications such as peer-to-peer file sharing or instant messaging.
»» Device control provides a way to define and implement a comprehensive policy throughout the organization that controls its employees which devices can and can not use. Employees have the flexibility they need but do not jeopardize the business.
"Control Data" ensures that users are not accidental transfer of sensitive data on your devices and applications. Implementing a solution to prevent data loss can be costly and complex to find a solution that provides this functionality as an integrated part of the endpoint solution.
"'The Encryption ensures that data on laptops and USB thumb drives is protected for all eventualities, because people lose things. Implement encryption can not be so simple and many people believe, so there are several factors to consider: You need to ensure that the initial application is successful, you can manage and change encryption policies across your organization, and, above all, that the solution is not in the way of users in the daily tasks of your file. 4. For external access. Complete protection of data storage limit must explain the data, not only in computers but also on removable media. You must control the use of removable storage devices by allowing certain to make the use of devices encrypted or limit users read-only access. Ensure that policies are in place to help protect all file shares and regulate the use of removable media. Doing so will reduce their exposure to worms that exploit these devices. 5. Reduce the risk at the gateway. To protect your business from virus threats, spam and spyware, reduce risk
Traffic Control in both the web email gateway and provides an additional layer protection against external threats.
You can also:
"Block file types that are often virus carriers such as EXE, COM, PIF, SCR, VBS, SHS, CHM and BAT. It is likely that your organization will need to receive these files via e-mail from abroad.
»Lock any file with more than one file type extension. Some viruses try to hide their true executable nature by using a double extension. Files such as LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT.vbs or ANNAKOURNIKOVA.JPG. VBS may appear to be ASCII text or a graphic harmless for the inexperienced.
'' Make sure that all executable code sent to your organization is checked and approved by someone in IT. This serves two purposes: not only can confirm that the code is free viruses, but also that the license does not conflict with existing software applications and is safe for work (in other words, no porn).
6. Manage your policy, imposing and education. If not already done so, establish a policy for safe computing and distributed to all employees. Be sure to read and understand the policy, and know whom to contact with questions or if their machines have been attacked or infected.
A security policy should include rules that prohibit:
»Download the executable files and documents directly from the Internet or by mail electronic
»Running unsolicited executables, documents and spreadsheets
"'Playing computer games or using protective screen that does not come with the operating system
Note that a written policy is as strong as the technology used to protect their systems and prevent employees from engaging in risky behavior to begin with.
