Since the last report recruits for service in December 1972, Uncle Sam has been a rush to all staff a volunteer armed force. For the U.S. Army, that meant recruiting 80,000 new soldiers each years - essentially replacing more than any BellSouth staff every 12 months.
Advertising did the trick initially. After "Today's Army wants to join you" failed, in January 1981 "be all that can be" became the battle cry. For two decades, wrapped around ads that made this branch look as adventurous as Outward Bound course, resonated with 17 to 24 years old (of which the Army is the largest employer in the nation). Then in 2001, which was sunk by an "army of one. "(" Although there are 1,045,690 soldiers like me, I am my own force... ") Critics scoffed that the slogan was wrong tin new (not more valued than individuality of conformity in the barracks?), The military said it was effective.
Then Iraq exploded.
In spite of adding thousands of additional recruiters, increasing the enlistment bonus and funding for college, fattening the ad budget and rattle the patriotic call, the Army could not fill his boots.
So the Army added more marketing weaponry. Hosts town hall meetings where civilians could meet soldiers and hear about their accomplishments. Tried product placement: Army mechanics on the Discovery Channel Monster Garage tricked out Jeep. And he launched a fund's participation in computer games quickly became a gold standard of "advergames" for its effectiveness and realism. Players take a role as real as the Military Intelligence (18F), Engineer (18C), Communications (18E), and combat Medic (18D) and the same weapons Army fire. And when the fire to the race, his aim is less precise.
Before it was launched on 4 July 2002, many hoped that the game of 7.3 million U.S. dollars would join the ranks of the $ 436 hammer and $ 640 toilet seat as a study in excess. Few predicted "America's Army" became a tool more effective marketing of the artillery, the transmission of authentic military experience in a voice that prospective recruits want to hear.
More than seven million registered users (anonymously in order to quash any fear of recruiter harangues) with 10,000 and 50,000 new download shoot-em-up daily. In a dozen performance and strafing missions, players progress through the stages of soldierhood - drilling in basic training, target practice with an M-16, learning on basic emergency medicine, and finally diving into combat. The game has been downloaded more than 16 million times, 20 percent of entering cadets West Point has played, and between 20 and 40 percent of new Army recruits have played so well.
"They seek out rather than vice versa" said Chris Chambers, deputy director of the Army Game Project within the Army Office of Economic Analysis and Manpower. , At an average cost 10 cents per hour versus $ 5 to $ 10 per hour for a TV commercial offers immersion rather than mere impression.
"The U.S. Army" has proven to be powerful weapons so that a store official game does brisk business selling collectible action figures, clothing, coffee mugs, and other gadgets adorned with the logo. The Army builds parties and tournaments across the country around it. A digital version and sequels including "America's Army: Special Forces ", where players try to earn a Green Beret by completing the Special Forces missions, have been released. Apple created an imitation: Boot Camp. And even the army now widely used in training.
Uncle Sam Wants You. . . to play. . . and not alone. Everyone is in the virtual action. Some, like the Army, creating a whole game that functions like a sales brochure. Just as the Army promoted its pro-military message through play, the United Nations World Food Program aims to educate about their mission to combat hunger worldwide. In "Food Force," players guide a helicopter on the war-torn island of Sheylan, (a mixture of fiction between Sri Lanka and Somalia) and drop relief supplies to a population with little shelter and less food. Or they create food rations, schedule shipments, or take a supply truck through hostile territory.
In the racing game "Volvo Drive for Life "(playable on Microsoft's Xbox), players are rewarded for finishing first, but to avoid accidents. Roam on a test drive at a dealership Volvo and you can try it in the showroom. Dealers may grant cartridges on select prospects and customers. After your pet through trompe real "Fight Night Round 3" (Xbox 360), Burger King created action games around its bizarre king and made available for just $ 3.99 customers who have bought a value meal. (Most games are sold at least 12 times that). Nike went beyond athletes wearing its shoes in the game NBA 2K6: Tournament players are given different pairs of virtual footwear and choose to put in your Nike shoe box according to the task. You can also customize footwear with personalization feature the same as in the Nike iD website.
In other advergames, marketing hitch a ride. On "CSI: 3 Dimensions of Murder, "Visa fraud, monitoring capabilities shine when a suspicious charge on the credit card of the victim triggered by a science research forensics - computer. "In Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Chaos Theory", the protagonist, secret agent Sam Fisher, scales a bright neon sign for the Ax deodorant and enters a quiet cafe inhabited by a Diet Sprite Zero vending machine. (Ax also created Mojo Master, an online game about picking up women.) In "Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow," Fisher retrieves a message from a Sony Ericsson smart phone to see who is the villain. In "Burnout Revenge, players and an accident unit Carl's Jr. delivery-truck. And the players in Activision's True Crime "titles take a break from the fight against gangs to recover stolen Puma sneakers.
Some vendors install games on corporate web sites or designated URLs, like "Life Saver Candy Stand, or FiletoFish.com, the website where a division of McDonald's posted "Shark Bait" (in English and Spanish). Players must protect the steak fish sandwich from attacking sharks. Wachovia, Carat's Fusion recreated the tricky 17th hole par 3 at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. Widgets to assess the distance and wind conditions in the 217-yard hole to pick a club: Crowd noise lets them know if there has been a good virtual swing. Wachovia has sponsored PGA Championship since 2002: The game was formed to promote that, sell tickets and create viral buzz. H & R Block, "Less-A-Buck" game on the website deductabuck.com is the tax season time. Players who correctly respond to questions about what can legally cancel this Seventies-TV-quiz-show-style game win prizes.
Hollywood and Nashville not to launch a movie or song without serving more than one side of the game. And despite strong royalty rates for movie titles, an action movie will almost certainly be reincarnated on a console. Turner's "Witchblade" promoted the TV series, and games about Men in Black II, Spider-Man, and Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course, were designed to promote new releases. Along with ads for Sprite, the sci-fi game "Planetside in "showed the ads for the film Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo, and free version of" Anarchy Online "a 15-second trailer for V for Vendetta that played in a continuous loop. Batman Begins ads in "Splinter Cell" is scheduled for launch in local markets.
The Da Vinci Code was their own game for PS2. Paramount Pictures drawn a Mission: Impossible III game for cell phones, while Miami Vice had an accompanying game to play on Sony's PSP handheld.
This is more than just fun and games. Yankee Group estimates that in 2007 a serious player who lurk in every home fourth in the United States. Nielsen says three out of four households with children under 34 have a gaming system. More people kill the orcs in the medieval-style quest for virtual gold and power, World of Warcraft, living in Denmark. In 2006, gamers around the world have more than 100 million PlayStation2s and 40 million Xbox consoles. In States USA, video games and raised more money than box office movie, and Yankee Group says the industry will exceed 8.3 billion U.S. dollars in 2008. PricewaterhouseCoopers said that the world will reach 55 billion U.S. dollars in 2009. That explains why a cottage industry in Los Angeles, gaming consoles based on their backs Lincoln Navigators.
Collectively, interactive ads embedded in quizzes and games made up more than $ 1 billion of the $ 12.5 billion in revenue online advertising in 2005, according to the Interactive Advertising Bureau. Nielsen (which now measures the industry) expects advertising spending within the games will go up $ 75 million in 2006 to $ 1 billion in 2010. Mitch Davis, CEO of Massive, thinks it could be almost double - and about 3 percent of all media spending, just shy of what advertisers spend online.

What are computer games used for?
OK, my parents think it is childish to play computer games (thief3, Splinter Cell, COD2 ... etc) but I do not think so. There is somthing about these things that just keeps me going. Somtimes I stand up for me, but only want to hear Dosn't breasts. I do not know how to explain this to my parrents. Can you give me good advice? Tnx
I really think that computer games are a stimulus for the brain. You must read and do other forms of stimulation are not only focusing on one thing.
