Is it all just a game? - A fight against boredom
One of the first things you never learn to do is play. Like all animals, Human beings seem born with a thirst for challenge, an urge to compete. As our world becomes increasingly divorced from nature, the need is perhaps greater than ever for activities which hone the senses, gird the loins, and stir the adrenaline.
Probably the first games were in training for hunting and for war, often deadly serious contest for the position in the tribe. Skills development in the absence of real danger is part of what makes our species so successful in maintaining low rates of mortality. This is reflected in modern recreational habits, the playing field for X-Box, the tribal imperative in the life of victory at all levels of culture.
It does not seem to matter who the opponent is, however for some reason, the overwhelming preference is to deal with a difficult. Perhaps the game is more interesting Perhaps the greatest satisfaction. Easily defeated an enemy gives no glory. And even when victory is more than one computer, the game itself, the honor is empty if they also won easily.
The need to win is the essence of human motivation. No other activity is free from it. The same biology that rewards to find food makes us bright pink to win the trophy or circuit board.
It is the realization that matters. In today's world, can be nearly impossible feel like life has meaning. Most people do something they do not care about someone who does not like, all day, for three or four decades before being sent permanently to the site for drinking lemonade.
The rest of the time, it seems that many of us would rather not do anything quite so much as win ... a game of our choice, to which we devote our time as much as we want. The type of game you choose says a lot about our personality. Some choose vigorous one-on-one sports such as racquetball, while other sporting equipment necessary for all the way to arthritis.
In the virtual world, players have been the beneficiaries of some of the more creative technological innovation rapid-fire recent explosion of pixels. Since arcade games first appeared in the years seventies, the unit most realistic virtual competitions has been endorsed by some of the deepest pockets in the Earth corporate. Designers, of course, are addicted Games geniuses who find that building the perfect mouse trap is a major challenge to play for another detour.
The end result is a growing class older people live more or less literally in a game. Advanced RPG's like the Sims and Second Life offer a virtual world complete with drama, the characters, and the last hot realistic detail, the mundane tasks of daily living. We have come full circle. As the industry becomes more robotic and more human labor obsolete in the end we find a nation of unemployed workers who spend the day playing in a virtual factory for points.
