The policy implications of computer games
There has been much discussion over the years as to whether computer games and video games are any sense, or are a form of mindless entertainment. Comments and arguments are frequently made on both sides to support their own arguments and opinions, and of course, demonstrates how the opposition group are false arguments. Opponents of computer games argue that video games are mostly related to violence, and spend hours each day simply destroying and killing everything that moves, and most of the things that is not only meaningless, but is more likely to encourage aggression and violence in the real world. With the increases and progress made by graphic realism possible with today's fast computer processing, the argument against computer games and video games continues with the suggestion that much of this mindless violence and aggression is realistic that you can de-sensitize the players, so that in the real world with less of a resistance to violence if they occur.
The counterargument is that while video games years ago were quite meaningless, that the idea was simple enough to destroy anything that moved, the concept of gaming has evolved so much that it is no longer a passive activity in which Players become mindless zombies learning to attack anything they see. Video games today have more complex stories and background on the context in who are the characters. That is no longer a clear division between the 'good side' and 'bad side', and players can find that are in situations in which no decision can be made easier as to who is good and who is not. In this situation, the player must make a series of moral judgments taking into account the consequences of actions taken.
Often in today's game players have the option of faction, group or race to that play, and it is easier to identify with the various factions within the game, players learn to see things from more than one side. Very often there is gap social, political, religious or otherwise separating the characters within a story, and by investigating more fully scenarios, conduct of research, talking to people and the exploration of the situation as far as possible, only then can begin to unravel the layers of the situation and make decisions about what to do.
Again, unlike the older games, there is often no one correct answer or course of action, the consequences of any action alternative simply a player decides to take. By killing one person and help another, the social and political ramifications are wide and extend the measure, and the real issues can not be realized until much further down the line. This increased focus on issues as profound makes the modern games a world away from any nonsense, and it can be argued that modern video games may actually have a role to play in helping people understand the history broader real-world situations.
