Festival offers exceptional Egypt

When most people think of holidays in Egypt, probably imagine visiting the pyramids of Giza, setting their eyes on the Great Sphinx, or perhaps take a camel ride through the desert. However, there is more to Egypt than most of their tourism par excellence, an example is the land of fantastic festivals and events.

Egypt religious festivals and carnivals - also known as mulid - are often associated with a particular Coptic or Sufi saint. However, many Egyptians seem to participate in all events, regardless of their religious beliefs. The ancient spring festival Sham in Nisim (associated with a Coptic saint) has been celebrated by Egyptians for thousands of years, usually between the months of Paremoude (April) and Pashons (May), after Easter Sunday. Alternatively, Ramadan has been celebrated with music and lights lanterns called fawanees. Music festivals are also abundant in Egypt, the country became one of the strongest in the music industry in the Middle East. Rock and metal music are becoming fashionable with the oriental jazz and traditional Egyptian folk music.

One of the most popular festivals of Egypt's Abu Simbel Festival, a Festival of the Sun, held in February and October of each year. During this event, crowds fill the temple of Abu Simbel at sunrise to watch the light moving through the stone inside the church, in turn, illuminating the statues of Ramses, Ra and Amun.

The story is that the Egyptian king Ramses II, angled precisely this temple to the shrine are lit twice year - once on his birthday, and once on the anniversary of his accession. Interestingly, only the inner sanctum of the temple lights up, while the statue Ptah (the god of darkness) remains in the shadows.

But now the sun hits the stone one day late each year. The reason is that in the decade 1960 Lake Nasser rose and flooded the area and the entire temple was moved to higher ground. Since then the sun has come to the stone one day after Ramses originally planned. Still, this festival attracts countless people every February and October to experience the fascinating effect of sunlight on the stones.
