Buy Compaq Presario V2000 Laptop Experience
As a busy medical student, I was looking for a portable laptop that fits easily in your bag and weighs me down. I did not need a face, Top-of-the-line computer for high demand or gambling. You simply need a computer to write e mails, surf the web, write documents, create Power Point presentations, working with Excel spreadsheets, syncing with a PDA, watch movies on DVD and listening to music. My new computer had to have a built-in wireless card, a DVD-ROM, a long battery life, an audio output port for connect headphones or external speakers, and USB ports. The most important feature, however, was a price a student can afford. I was ready to resign some characteristics in order to keep the price below $ 1000. I reviewed several popular computer models, including Dell Inspiron, Sony Vaio, Toshiba Satellite, and IBM ThinkPad. Most of these brands came with price tags that put them out of my reach. Although he knew that Hewlett Packard and Compaq made affordable computers, I associated these brands with heavy, bulky notebooks. After several weeks of searching for a affordable equipment that meets my requirements, I found the Compaq Presario V2000 href = "http://www.discount-laptopbattery.com/compaq-presario-v2000-series.htm"> (Compaq Presario V2000 battery) and cousin of Hewlett Packard, the DV1000 (HP Pavilion DV1000. I got two of these models in an office supply store. I was surprised to find the HP and Compaq names on small, more compact notebooks. Much has been written about the similarities and differences between these two teams. For my needs, the only obvious benefit I saw in the DV1000 over the V2000 is the Quick Play feature, for watching movies or listening to a CD without going through a complete Windows start-up. Because I do not see this feature very often, I decided to buy the slightly cheaper Compaq V2000, which is marketed as "take it anywhere" model in the Presario line.
Purchase
I realized that I could get the best price on a V2000 by ordering a notebook customized HP website. Customizing the V2000 allowed me save money by downgrading some of the options that were not very important to me. Save even more by taking advantage of student discount, HP. The major decisions in customizing my V2000 were the operating system, processor, screen, memory, hard drive size and speed, drive CD, battery, and the wireless option. The configuration I purchased is as follows:
- OPERATING SYSTEM: Windows XP Home
- Processor: Intel Pentium M 710 1.4 GHz
- SCREEN: 14.0 "WXGA Widescreen (not the BrightView)
- Memory: 256 MB SDRAM (1x256)
- Hard disk: 40 GB 4200 rpm
- CD DRIVE: DVD / CD-RW combo drive
- BATTERY: Lithium Ion 6 -
- WIRELESS: Intel PRO / Wireless 2200BG WLAN (without Bluetooth).
The HP website seems to always offer special deals or sales. Sometimes you get lucky and find a coupon code for additional savings. At the moment I placed my order, HPshopping was offering free shipping, a discount of $ 30 on custom notebooks, and a free upgrade to the DVD / CD-RW. Shipping to most states in the U.S. not incur a sales tax. The total of my computer with the student discount was $ 920.26, and $ 30 rebate brings it down to $ 890.26. I also bought 2-year Extension of Express repair service an additional $ 99.99. In the course shopping, I also talked myself into buying the HP Deskjet 5850 wireless inkjet printer for $ 101.24. The purchase of equipment and printer at the same time I authorized an additional bonus of $ 50. I was very happy with these prices, but the only downside to request a custom notebook on the website is that it may take a few weeks for delivery. My team had 13 days from order to delivery.
Form and Design
The V2000 is well-designed and sharp-looking. The inside of the notebook is silver and the top and bottom are black plastic. The specifications for the web page report weight of 5.21 pounds, and physical dimensions as 13.15 in. x 9.1 in. I was pleasantly surprised the first time I picked - The team think it should be much heavier than it is. The widescreen design allows a very functional screen size that does not make the team too bulky or heavy. The thickness of the computer is higher in the rear (1.53 inches) than it is on the front (1.29 inches). This puts the keyboard at a slight angle up, which happens to be a comfortable ergonomic feature. However, it may seem strange the first time you close the screen and look near the top is not level.
The design of the V2000 has some minor defects. First, the power cord plugs into the back of the computer. This can be cumbersome when you need to go to AC power. Secondly, there is little slack in the door for the CD on the right side panel. I realize that when I the computer side. In order to protect the door of the CD when I travel with the team, I (CV Pavilion zd8000 battery) bought a new bag that came with a protective laptop sleeve. The only other important design issue is the thickness of the unit. It is slightly thicker than initially expected. Using the protective sleeve adds thickness greater than unity. This takes up precious space in my backpack for school.
The screen size is where the V2000 wins my respect. The design of 14-inch widescreen display offers a high standard comparable to a screen of 12 inches or 14 inches screen, but the screen width of 15 inches. This keeps the size of the small, handheld computer while providing a screen that is very functional and easy use. The widescreen design allows me to see the entire width of a document, even when working in landscape mode. It also allows me to easily view two documents side side. I have also found that I can play a DVD movie in a small window in the corner of the screen and still have enough screen area useful for work in other applications.
The V2000 (HP Pavilion dv4000 battery) only has two custom options for the Screen: widescreen or widescreen with BrightView. The BrightView screen is more reflective surface that provides more vivid colors and higher contrast. Although I have read many criticisms complimentary BrightView display, I decided not to. I worried that increasing the reflectivity of the brighter display would cause problems with glare and increased visibility of dust and fingerprints. Furthermore, the BrightView screen seemed to be an additional cost that I did not think it was absolutely necessary for my needs. At the time I bought the computer, the BrightView option added $ 50 to prices. Since then, HP has reduced the price to $ 25 for this update. I do not regret the choice standard display, such as image quality is sufficient for most of my needs. The only time that counts the shortcomings of the standard screen is when I watch DVD movies. The DVD video quality is a bit washed and grainy, especially when viewed in full screen mode. If I were buying the V2000 at today's prices probably I spend the extra money and get the BrightView.
Speakers
The V2000 comes with stereo speakers JBL mounted on the front panel. The audio quality is ideal for watching movies, listening to music or streaming audio. I am very satisfied with the quality of sound in all ranges volume. I connected the computer to an external set of speakers, and sounded even better. Like most laptops, the audio quality of the V2000 can not compete with your home entertainment center. But for a team, the audio is pretty impressive.
Processor and Performance
At first I thought my order V2000 with a Celeron processor to save even more money. But after doing some research, I decided that this was one area where I want to downgrade too. I decided to go the least expensive option Centrino, which at that time was the Pentium M-710, 1.4 GHz also the least expensive option selected hard drive (40 GB, 4200 rpm) and the minimum amount of memory (256 MB). At first I realized that the team's performance was not as nimble as I would have liked. Some programs and windows seemed to have much time to open and close. I tinkered with the visual effects and startup options to reduce minimize the number of processes running in the background. This seemed to help somewhat, but it became apparent that he had underestimated the amount of memory needed. Fortunately, the V2000 (unlike the Compaq Presario R3000 battery) has two slots for memory cards, and I was only one slot with 256 MB that I ordered in the initial configuration. I installed an additional 512MB card in the second slot. I bought additional memory card from a local computer store for about $ 60 after rebate. The memory upgrade has greatly improved performance team. Programs seem to open and close much faster and I no longer feel that the computer is running a few seconds behind me. Furthermore, I had the opportunity to obtain one 768 MB of memory for less than it would have cost me to setup the initial order of 512 MB. I do not regret my decisions on the processor or hard drive size. After the memory upgrade, performance is agile enough to my demands, and still have 30GB of free space available on your hard disk.
The team is a bit hot during routine use, but not beyond what one would expect for a laptop. The cooling fans kick on occasionally when running high-demand applications or multiple processes. The fans are a little harder than I expected, but not a major problem. Periodically activate the cooling fans when playing DVD movies or listen to music directly from a CD. This can stifle the audio if you listen at low volumes.
The keyboard and touchpad are among the best features of the V2000. The keys have a comfortable, springy feel. The widescreen design adapts to a distribution wider keyboard. Above the keyboard, there are several buttons: main power, wireless button, and volume controls. I like the placement of these buttons further because they are so close as to be easily accessible but separate from the main keyboard. The touchpad and mouse buttons work very well. The touchpad also has a region that has the same function as the scroll wheel on a mouse. The only problem I noticed with this feature is that the palm of my right hand sometimes touches the touchpad when I'm writing and the screen scrolls a few lines. This is easily remedied by turning the touchpad compared to write long documents or when using an external mouse. The touchpad control button is located between the space bar and touch screen. There is an orange LED that lets the user know if the control is in touch pad.
Input and Output Ports
There are several ports on both side panels of the computer. The panel on the left contains the following ports:
- CIP slot
- USB 2.0
- Phone line and Ethernet ports
- Base expansion (expansion port base sold separately)
- VGA video output
In addition to the CD, the right side panel contains the following ports:
- 6-in-1 memory card reader
- Firewire port
- Two USB 2.0 ports
- S-Video
The front panel contains the audio output the microphone input, the release button on the screen, various status lights, and stereo speakers. The input port AC power is in the rear panel. Total, I am impressed with the input and output port options on the V2000. It's good to have three USB ports, and is even better than them in the two side panels. My only complaint with the configuration of ports is that the input AC power is not very convenient to access in the rear panel. I would prefer that the port AC input in one of the side panels, and has one of the less frequently used ports (VGA or S-Video) moved to the rear.
Wireless
I asked my computer with the Intel PRO / Wireless 2200 (without Bluetooth). The wireless card can be disabled directly from the keyboard by pressing the wireless button. There is a blue light on the wireless button that tells you when the card is on and there is also an indicator light blue on the front panel that lets the user know if the wireless card is enabled. The network card has worked for me every time, and I am happy with its range and performance.
Battery
There are two battery options on the V2000: 6-lithium ion or lithium ion 12. Because I was trying to minimize both the cost and weight of the team, I ordered the V2000 with the 6 cell battery. With daily use, I can get almost three hours of 6-cell. This has worked very well for my requirements. I mainly use the computer at home, school library, and cafes. Because I never seem to be far from a power source, the life of the 6-cell battery and it worked well for me. However, for those who need more battery life and not worry about the extra weight, the V2000 can be ordered with a battery of 12 cells (instead of 6-cell), for an additional $ 25.
Operating System and Software
The V2000 comes with the Home or Windows XP Professional. The operating system was already installed when the computer was delivered, and the system discs included with the operating manuals. The equipment was delivered with a thin "Getting Started" manual. The most complete manual is on a CD that comes with the computer.
Guarantee customer
Although I was on a quest to keep the cost of this equipment as low as I could, I bought an additional guarantee that I could have some peace of mind. I bought 2 years coverage Repair Express for $ 99.99. Information on the guarantee was given in a separate box with the extended warranty information, a security label, and mail-in registration forms. No I had the opportunity to evaluate this coverage, because I have not had any problems with your computer.
Conclusion
Although the Compaq Presario V2000 is not the smallest and lightest notebook on the market, I'm glad I bought this computer. The screen design The V2000 offers a wide significant functional advantage with little impact on its portability. Despite some design problems of minor importance (the AC input on the rear panel, the door of the CD, and thickness), I would recommend the computer to someone who wants a middle-of-the-road computer for decent price. The custom options allowed me to build a computer that fits my basic needs, while keeping the cost within my reach. The custom options are also considerably more flexible sophisticated users can upgrade to more powerful options. This makes the V2000 well-suited to a wide range of users.
