However, the most recent test announced by the CEH found 6200 parts per million (ppm) of phthalates in the earphone wire of the iPhone and 6,300 ppm in the cable of iPod headphones, even higher levels to 5070 ppm, which Greenpeace found in the headphone cable from the iPhone.
More than 70 environmental groups signed a letter to former Vice President Al Gore, who is on the board of Apple, asking him to push the company to become more sustainable. Environmentalists express surprise that as America's best known advocate of the environment, Gore would oppose shareholder resolutions which Apple says it voted unanimously against asking Apple to be greener.
Apple customers should know than they are in their hands an iPhone that can get a dose of toxic chemicals as well, Green said. It is clear that Apple's priority is to market new products as fast as possible, not as safely as possible. For customers who are buying now, that's not good enough.
Apple has not responded directly to the CEH dispute letter, but the company announced plans to eliminate all polyvinyl chloride (PVC) products in 2008. According to Apple, CVP is the source of phthalates in the headphone cables.
Apple is recalling 1.8 million batteries in its laptop computers in all the world after repeated overheating complaints. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, there were nine reports of batteries overheating, two of which were reported minor burns caused by machines.
The recall affects laptops like the iBook G4 and PowerBook G4, sold between the October 2003 and August 2006. The recall comes shortly after Dell recalled over 4 million notebook computer batteries, which were also supplied by Sony.
The company has drawn criticism from CEH and other environmental groups before the charge that Apple has enough recycling policies and disposal of electronic waste.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs published an open letter on the website of your company in response to criticism of the medium environment leveled at Apple in detailing the company's plans for the disposal of many hazardous chemicals in their products and increasing recycling.
